How to Play a Holy Priest

The holy priest basic rotation boils down to taking advantage of our Holy Word passive so that we can make use of as many Holy Word spells as possible.

This is made easy by the fact that our single target heals like Heal and Flash Heal reduce the cooldown of our single target Holy Word spell, Holy Word: Serenity. And our AoE spell, Prayer of Healing reduces the cooldown of our AoE Holy Word spell, Holy Word: Sanctify.

This means that we don’t have to make too many difficult decisions when it comes to what kind of spells we should be using. Either you need more Single Target, or you need more AoE. Simple.

Standard Playstyle
Raid Cast Priority

Keep in mind that while we do have a general priority for our spells, we do not have a rigid rotation similar to a DPS, especially since we are so reactionary. Below is a general cast priority for all raid content, from LFR to Mythic.

  1. Cast Prayer of Mending on cooldown.
  2. Cast your Holy Words as often as possible, not worrying too much about overheal, as some are acceptable. Holding them for a short period to get more out of them is also perfectly normal.
  3. If 4 or more people are injured, cast Circle of Healing. Circle of Healing is a smart heal, so it should make targeting easy for you.
  4. During raid-wide damage situations, cast Prayer of Healing. Prayer of Healing is very dumb, its heal is completely location-based. Make sure you are using it when the majority of the raid is damaged so that you can avoid overheal.
  5. Flash Heal should be used for emergency triage.
  6. For light damage fill with Heal. This usually happens at the start of encounters when only a tank is taking some damage or during downtime on encounters.
  7. When moving, if you have no instant casts then cast Renew if players need the healing.
  8. For little or no damage phases cast Smite until you need to heal again.

Dungeon Cast Priority

Keep in mind that while we do have a general priority for our spells, we do not have a rigid rotation similar to a DPS, especially since we are so reactionary. Below is a general idea of when you will want to cast what in a dungeon setting, from Normal all through general Mythic+

  1. Cast your Holy Words as often as possible, not worrying too much about overheal, as some is acceptable. Holding them for a short period to get more out of them is also perfectly normal.
  2. If talented, cast Divine Star on cooldown.
  3. During single target damage/spot healing situations, cast Flash Heal, making sure to rotate targets to make use of Trail of Light.
  4. Cast Circle of Healing if some of the group is damaged. Circle of Healing can also be saved for when you need to move and heal at the same time.
  5. During group-wide damage situations where triage is not required, cast Prayer of Healing.
  6. During downtime, cast Prayer of Mending when possible. Prayer of Mending is also great to cast on the move.
  7. Cast damage spells in your downtime. Take a look at the Damage Cast Priority tab for a damage rotation.

Note: For heavy damage use Apotheosis and/or Guardian Spirit to increase throughput capabilities. Divine Hymn can also be cast and canceled for the healing buff if needed.

Flash Concentration Playstyle
Raid Cast Priority

With Flash Concentration, you gain access to a buff that will increase the healing and efficiency of Heal. Heal will become a primary filler, but you do not want to forget about casting our usual short cooldown abilities. If you're curious about the talent setup for this legendary, take a look here.

  1. Flash Heal should be used every 20 seconds to keep up your Flash Concentration buff.
  2. Cast your Holy Words as often as possible, not worrying too much about overheal, as some are acceptable. Holding them for a short period to get more out of them is also perfectly normal.
  3. If 4 or more people are injured, cast Circle of Healing.
  4. Cast Prayer of Mending on cooldown.
  5. If you are not at 5 stacks of Flash Concentration, use Flash Heal for emergency triage.
  6. Cast Heal. A lot. With 5 Flash Concentration stacks, you will use it for emergency triage and general healing.
  7. When moving, if you have no instant casts then cast Renew if players need the healing.
  8. Cast Shadow Word: Pain on an enemy as long as they will not die before the DoT expires.
  9. For little or no damage phases cast Smite until you need to heal again. Smite takes priority over other DPS spells because Smite currently is one of the only ones that procs Surge of Light.
